Katie’s Journey

I am at the end of my rope.  I have been emailing Rene who has given advice and I have read all yours comments.

Our vet came out to the house today.  I brought Katie back home from the emergency hospital that we had to take her to because she developed a severe and I mean severed infection.  She has necrotic areas on the hip area above where the leg was removed.  This wound is horrible.  We are cleaning it the way we were told.  How can we find someone who could surgically repair the openings that have developed.  I don’t want to loose her and it is breaking my heart to see this.  There has to be something out there that can be done.  We have come so far in medicine you would think this would be something that could be corrected.

  1. Hang in there. Your Katie is a strong girl and can get through this.

But you need to put yourself in a calmer space (I know it’s really hard but you can do this).

Try some breathing exercises so you can see things clearly.

We are all here for you. You are not alone.

    Now b r e a t h e reply inhaling………hold it a few seconds….now exhale slowly.

    b. r. e. a. t. h. e. ..in slowly…hold….exhale slowly……

I don’t have all Katie’s history in fro t of me but I just wanted to reach out as quickly as possible andlet you know we are holding your hand and won’t let go.

We can help you get to a more empowering state where you’ll be able to find the solutions syou need and we will all help you.

Now go hug your precious Katie and tell her you love her. Everything g will be okay.

I’ll get back as soon as I can figure out what’s going on as will all the others.

In the meantime, practice those breathing exercises…….I’m serious! I’ll be watching!

Surrounding you with peace and healing solutions,

  2. Can you update us a little further….

Eating yet? Drinking yet? Pooping? Peeing?

Even without the added stress of the. major surgery, just dealing with an infection is tough enough.

What is the vet doing or the infection?

There are several on the site who have endured infections after surgery. Yes, it is extremely stressful for you to have to deal with, but with proper care and meds this too shall pass.

    It will get better!!

We have really, really long rope so you keep holding on…..it’s the kind of rope that has no ends by the way!!

  3. Katie’s mom. I have read Katie’s blog. I am sorry she has had this set back. Like Sally has said breathe. Please post some information in the forums as you will get more of a response and maybe someone has some experience with that. Just post under telling your story or treatment recovery etc.
You are in our thoughts. I can’t speak to any experience with the infection as Sassy didn’t have that problem.

I am sorry that you are going through such a rough time. We are all here for you. Through the ups & downs.

    hugs
    Michelle & Sassy

  4. Oh gosh. I’m so sorry. That has to be so frightening for you.

I presume Katie is on antibiotics as well as what you are doing to clean the wound?

    Some thoughts are :
    1. Have tests been done to confirm what type of bacterial infection you are dealing with?
    2. Is there a specialist surgeon that you can see for an opinion?

If you post on the Ask a Vet in the Forums here one of the vets could give you an opinion and others who may have had similar experiences can chime in. Also, maybe go to the chat room. I know that some of the regulars are usually there.

If you have a good relationship with your vet I’d be on the phone to them again. If you don’t have faith in them then I’d be going to another vet. Maybe someone here might be able to make a recommendation if you let us know your rough location.

Good luck. I know it’s hard not to panic but keep focussed on getting a solution.

  5. It’s been 6 days since Katie’s surgery? Does your vet have her on antibiotics? what did the vet say about the wound and the infection?
Hang in there.. I know it’s hard..

I have no answers why some pups bounce back like nothing happened and then some have a much harder time. I wish I did. We all do.

Is her incision covered? Has she been eating and doing her business?

Keep us posted.. you are in our thoughts!
